Wireless gaming headsets have become an essential part of modern gaming, offering players the freedom to move without the limitations of cables while maintaining immersive audio and reliable communication. Over the years, advancements in wireless technologies have significantly reduced latency concerns, allowing gamers to enjoy responsive sound reproduction that closely rivals wired alternatives. Features such as virtual surround sound, AI-assisted noise reduction, multi-platform compatibility, long battery life, and customizable RGB lighting have further increased their appeal among casual and competitive players alike. While wireless models often command a higher price and require periodic charging, their convenience, cleaner desk setup, and ever-improving audio performance continue to make them one of the most popular gaming peripherals on the market. The latest G5 MAX Wireless Gaming Headset by EDIFIER/HECATE is a feature-rich contender aiming to deliver immersive audio, versatile connectivity, and all-day gaming comfort.

HECATE, EDIFIER's professional gaming brand, was launched as "EDIFIER Gaming Product Line" in 2013 and operated as an independent brand in 2018. HECATE injects 25 years of EDIFIER's acoustic technology into gaming equipment, opening the door to the gaming world for gamers. Since its inception, HECATE has always maintained an almost obsessive pursuit of "performance redundancy", and has repeatedly subverted the industry's imagination with a very futuristic design style. We believe that every boundary between gaming and life has a reason to be reshaped!

Designed with competitive gamers in mind, the G5 MAX arrives with a feature set centered around gaming, multimedia consumption, and cross-platform versatility. At the core of the headset are 53mm PEN diaphragm dynamic drivers paired with a 64Ω high-impedance acoustic architecture, Hi-Res Audio and Hi-Res Audio Wireless certifications, and support for the LHDC 5.0 codec. According to EDIFIER, this combination is capable of reproducing frequencies between 20Hz and 40kHz while providing access to high-resolution wireless audio playback (96kHz/24-bit). THX Spatial Audio technology is also onboard, including support for 7.1.4 virtual surround processing, with the goal of creating a 360-degree sound field that can assist with positional awareness and directional audio cues in games. For connectivity, the G5 MAX supports multiple operating modes, including Bluetooth 6.0, 2.4GHz wireless operation through both USB-A and USB-C adapters, and a wired connection option. This allows the headset to be used across a wide variety of devices, including desktop PCs, laptops, smartphones, tablets, PlayStation consoles, and Nintendo Switch systems. The company's Flash Speed 2.4GHz wireless technology is designed to reduce latency while maintaining a stable wireless connection, particularly in gaming scenarios where responsiveness is a priority. Voice communication is handled through a combination of dual built-in microphones and a detachable boom microphone. The microphone system is supported by ENC and AI-based noise-cancellation technologies that are intended to reduce unwanted background noise during voice chats, gaming sessions, or online meetings. Comfort has also received considerable attention, with the G5 MAX featuring a lightweight 305g design, memory foam ear cushions, protein leather surfaces, and HECATE's 3D Pivot Fit adjustment mechanism that allows the earcups to adapt to different head shapes and wearing positions. Rounding out the specifications is a large integrated battery rated for up to 305 hours of playback via Bluetooth mode or up to 227 hours when using the 2.4GHz wireless connection under the company's testing conditions.

PACKAGING AND CONTENTS

edifier hecate g5 max review 1t

The G5 MAX arrived inside a black and silver box the front of which has a large product picture, company logo and several logos related to its main features and certifications.

The main product features are printed at the rear in 8 different languages right under a picture showcasing both available colors.

The headset is properly positioned between several pieces of cardboard.

Along with the G5 MAX inside the box you’ll also find a 2.4GHz wireless adapter, detachable boom microphone, USB-A to USB-C cable, HECATE sticker, safety paper, certification paper and the quick start guide.

THE G5 MAX

The G5 MAX weighs just 305g and as expected from EDIFIER it's constructed with quality materials.

In terms of size this is a medium-sized model as seen above.

The HECATE logo located on the exterior of both earcups is the sole ARGB lighting zone.

Typically, the model name is printed on both ends of the headband.

The detachable boom microphone port is located at the front of the left earcup.

This is a flexible microphone that also has a mute ring LED at the front.

At the base of the left earcup we find the built-in microphone, USB-C charging/data port and the microphone/lights on/off button.

At the rear HECATE has placed the volume control knob, multi-function G button (power on/off, play/pause, answer/end call, reject call, switch sound effects, GHz/USB/Bluetooth mode) and the activity LED.

As always left/right markings are placed on the interior just over the earcups.

The earpads are large enough to accommodate most ears while the interior fabric also has left/right markings.

The earcups can rotate up to 105 degrees and tilt up to 37.5 degrees.

The HECATE logo is placed on the exterior of the headband.

The headband of the G5 MAX can extend up to 3.5cm on either side (7cm total) via 8 visible increments.

The 2.4GHz USB dongle is a bit larger than expected but at least it looks nice.

ARGB illumination is limited with the G5 MAX since just the HECATE logo on the exterior of the earcups lights up (good for people who don’t like extravagant peripherals).

PC DRIVER

software 1t

The PC software is very easy to use, just install it and when launched it will show detected devices at the center.

There’s a total of 5 tabs in this software, first is the audio tab from where you can adjust audio and select your preferred equalizer balance from 8 game presets, 5 music presets and 3 movie presets.

Second tab is all about THX spatial audio so from here you can set the G5 MAX to use either stereo or spatial audio.

Third tab is about the microphone so you can adjust its values and also create your very own equalizer.

From the 4th tab you can adjust the lighting settings (3 effects).

Finally, from inside the settings you can adjust the auto power off, adjust prompt tones, change connection mode, select between gaming and music modes, clear Bluetooth pairing and reset the headset to its factory settings.

CONNEX APP

connex app 1

The ConneX Bluetooth app pretty much allows you to adjust the same things as the PC driver.

Slight changes are located inside the settings menu since from here you can reprogram the multi-purpose G button (all else again can be configured from the PC driver).

CONCLUSION

EDIFIER HECATE has created a gaming headset that successfully targets both competitive gamers and users looking for an all-around wireless audio solution. Its standout qualities include a comfortable design that remains enjoyable during extended sessions, solid build quality, mature aesthetics, and audio reproduction that performs equally well in games, music, and multimedia content. THX spatial audio processing contributes to accurate positional cues in supported titles, making it easier to identify directional sounds, while the wireless performance proved particularly strong during testing, maintaining a stable connection at distances of up to 15 meters even with a concrete wall separating the headset from the transmitter. Battery life is also among the strongest in its category, further enhancing the overall user experience (although you’ll only hit advertised numbers at around 40% volume). The are some shortcomings with the G5 MAX, however. The RGB lighting implementation feels relatively limited when compared to some competing gaming headsets, the USB dongle is larger than expected and finally the HECATE desktop software, while functional and feature-rich, has an interface that feels somewhat dated by current standards.

Retailing for USD119.99 inside the USA (Amazon.com) and for 166.72Euros inside the EU (Amazon.de) the G5 MAX by EDIFIER HECATE is priced well, especially on the other side of the Atlantic. Overall, even though the G5 MAX is not perfect it does deliver on most things gamers care for from audio quality and THX surround sound to connectivity and a very comfortable frame and so the Golden Award is obviously in order.
