One of the questions i get a lot lately is what consumers should look for when out to get a new gaming mouse and i just say one thing, grip. Sure weight (adjustable if possible), sensor (tracking speed and accuracy) and looks (design and RGB lighting) are equally important for optimal results but if a mouse doesn't feel right at home in your hand then everything else matters not. For good or bad however many manufacturers have chosen to place grip second to sensors (some even third following looks/design) and so it's not very easy to come across a gaming mouse that combines all of the above. Dream Machines may not be the most popular gaming peripherals manufacturer in the world but they've gained quite a few loyal followers over the years thanks to their very good gaming mice and today with me i have one of their latest models, the DM4 Evo.

Dream Machines specializes in providing the best solutions for gamers. We wanted to create something that would fulfil the needs of even the most demanding players. Many gamers cannot reach their potential as they a limited by hardware, such as a slow processor or weak graphics card. Our computers make sure that each gamer can reach his or her highest abilities, by offering our customers the most advanced equipment available on the market. Dream Machines is working with the top designers, experts, and manufacturers from around the world. Dream Machines only uses the highest quality components dedicated for games, which create a completely surreal experience. We put great emphasis on quality and are always open to customer feedback as we will continue to improve as new technologies become available. Rise above the rest and to the best of your abilities! Stand out from the group playing the best you can. Reach your dreams as the future of gaming lies within Dream Machines!

Just like with the previously reviewed DM1 FPS (review here) for the DM4 Evo Dream Machines used the very popular zero-acceleration PMW3389 optical sensor by Pixart that features a maximum resolution of 16000DPI, 400IPS tracking speed, 50G acceleration and 1000Hz polling rate. The DM4 Evo also features a total of 7 programmable buttons, matte surface, tri-zone RGB lighting (with 9 different modes/effects - 10 including all off - and an on/off button), Huano Blue switches for both primary buttons (up to 20 million clicks), 1.8 meter long shoelace cable and a LOD (lift-off-distance) of just 1.8mm. So, on paper the DM4 Evo really seems to have it all, but is that really the case?

SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES

PACKAGING AND CONTENTS

The black box in which the DM4 EVO is packed has the company logo at the front right next to a product picture and the product name.

At the rear of the box we find yet another product picture (partial) right beneath the main product features.

Along with the DM4 EVO gaming mouse Dream Machines has also packed extra PTFE feet (including what looks like a cover for the optical sensor) and the user manual.

THE DM4 EVO

Measuring just 126mm in length, 63mm in width and 40mm in height the DM4 EVO is a small to medium sized gaming mouse.

As usual two programmable buttons can be seen on the left side of the mouse.

Dream Machines has placed their logo at the rear of the enclosure and as expected it's also one of the three RGB lighting zones.

Would be nice to see extra buttons on the right side (ambidextrous) but that's not the case with the DM4 Evo.

Two DPI selection buttons are located on top.

The clickable scroll wheel is rubber coated and is also one of the three RGB lighting zones.

Taking a look at the base of the DM4 Evo we see 3 PTFE feet, the optical sensor and the on/off button for the RGB lighting.

At the end of the 1.8 meter long shoelace cord we find a gold plated USB plug (not as soft as the one used with the DM1 FPS).

DM SOFTWARE

From the main software tab, you can program all 7 buttons, set the desired DPI levels for the 4 available presets (you can also assign a color to each and adjust each axis separately) and import/export profiles.

By clicking on the lighting selection, you can choose between the 9 available modes/effects and adjust both the direction and the speed of the chosen effect.

Inside the mouse parameter tab, you will find the sensitivity and speed options.

By default, the polling rate is set to 500Hz so you should change that to 1000Hz from within the polling rate tab.

Of course, by clicking on the macro editor you will launch the macro recording tab as seen above.

CONCLUSION

dream machines dm4 evo review b

I was looking forward to testing the DM4 EVO Gaming Mouse by Dream Machines mainly because I happen to be especially fond of the all-time classic design featured in models like the Sensei by SteelSeries and the FK1 by Zowie. Now although for my hand it would be best had the DM4 Evo been just a couple of centimetres longer i can’t say i had any issues during the two weeks i ended up using it with games like Gears Tactics, COD Modern Warfare Online, COD Modern Warfare 2 Remastered and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Accuracy is great, gliding is almost excellent and as for the speed of the sensor well I doubt 99% of the people out there will exceed even 10k DPI so no problems here either. The RGB lighting system of the DM4 Evo is also very good, especially the underside section. Unfortunately, you can’t control each of the 3 zones individually but that aside it does look great (the on/off button also simplifies things).

At the time of this review the DM4 Evo is only available inside the EU for a price of 39.99Euros (Amazon.de) and honestly things couldn’t be better. As a matter of fact, the DM4 Evo delivers much more than anyone would ever expect from a gaming mouse in the sub-40Euros price category. Speed, accuracy, grip, looks, i don’t have much more to ask from a gaming mouse (well a bit larger would be great) and that’s why the DM4 Evo by Dream Machines gets our Golden Award.
