INTRODUCTION

   Although the majority of serious gamers and enthusiasts is usually not much into affordable gaming peripherals like mice, keyboards and headsets there are always those who simply can't afford or are just unwilling to spend much on such devices. Unfortunately, the old saying "you get what you pay for" is usually true even for such products and so it's quite rare for affordable gaming peripherals to stand out in the market. Still what matters most to consumers on tight budgets is the price/performance ratio and with that in mind there are some gaming peripherals manufacturers which do stand out more than others. EasySMX is one such manufacturer and after checking out their interesting ESM-9013 wireless gamepad today we'll be reviewing their COOL 2000 Gaming Headset.

   Just like with the ESM-9013 wireless gamepad the COOL 2000 Gaming Headset by EasySMX is a low budget model aimed towards consumers who are not looking to get the highest performance and quality model available in the market. In terms of available/offered features the COOL 2000 comes with two 50mm neodymium magnet stereo drivers (frequency response of 20Hz-20KHz with 32 Ohm impedance and 115dB sensitivity), fixed boom omni-directional microphone (2.2 KOhm impedance with -42dB sensitivity), 10 exterior earcup LEDs with three different lighting effects (5 on each side - available with blue/orange/red LEDs) and a suspension headband design for optimal comfort. So, time to take a closer look and see what EasySMX has put on the table with their COOL 2000 Gaming Headset.

PACKAGING AND CONTENTS

EasySMX uses the same packaging as with their ESM-9013 wireless gamepad so the COOL 2000 also arrived inside a black box with their logo at the front just over the product name.

The color selection of the LEDs is placed on the left side right over contact information about EasySMX and a 2D barcode.

In the box you will find the COOL 2000 Gaming Headset, y-splitter 3.5mm audio adapter, user manual and a registration paper (includes a USD10 voucher).

THE COOL 2000

The COOL 2000 Gaming Headset by EasySMX is a rather large model (although it weighs just 328g).

Here you can see how the COOL 2000 looks on our mannequin head (larger than most headsets we've reviewed recently).

All of the exterior is made out of plastic (minus the grill) and as you can see EasySMX designed the exterior of the earcups after the rims of a car.

The product name is printed on the exterior just over each earcup.

EasySMX used a fixed (not removable) boom microphone that has a LED at the end for when it's powered on.

At the rear of the left earcup we find the microphone and LED buttons (from here you can enable/disable the microphone and change the effects of the LEDs) and the volume control knob.

Left and right markings are engraved on the interior on both ends of the headband.

The earpads are quite large and are dressed with PU leather (padding is ok but it could be better).

As expected, the company name is placed on the exterior of the headband.

The two meter long braided cable ends on two gold plated 3.5mm plugs and a gold plated USB plug (the USB is used only to power the LEDs).

With 5 LEDs on each side the COOL 2000 looks nice but single color models in the RGB era may not be ideal.

CONCLUSION

   We used the COOL 2000 headset for a period of 12 days while playing all our favourite games currently (Star Wars Battlefront II, Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, Resident Evil 2 Remastered, World of Warships, Star Citizen and Dreadnought) and honestly, we weren't really that impressed. Mids and highs are quite clear but not very detailed whereas bass levels are somewhat low and not exactly deep/rich. Volume levels on the other hand are quite good but there's also a small amount of audio distortion when the volume is turned all the way up something which we didn't really find important (we rarely used it close to its maximum volume). Also, although very lightweight because of its size (and perhaps also its design) the suspension system is not on par (as effective) with what we've seen by other manufacturers like SteelSeries so the COOL 2000 is not really a very comfortable headset (certainly not ment for long periods of time - at least for us).

   With a current price tag set at USD28.99 inside the USA (Amazon.com) and at 17Euros inside the EU (Amazon.co.uk) the old saying "you get what you pay for" stands also true for the COOL 2000 Gaming Headset by EasySMX. This is also why we weren't really expecting something "special" from it in terms of audio performance and of course build quality (we are however certain that EasySMX can design and manufacture such a headset if they ever decide to expand their product lines to higher price ranges). So, although we really can't recommend the COOL 2000 for serious gamers and consumers in general looking for an all-around quality gaming headset, we can recommend it to consumers on very tight budgets looking for a low-cost headset for themselves or as a present for young kids/teenagers.
