Although for the majority of the gaming market even a 5000DPI (dots per inch) gaming mouse should be more than sufficient there are those who are always looking to get their hands on something even better. Now if you've been following developments in the gaming market you should know that sales of both 4k and ultra-wide 1440p curved monitors are on the rise lately and so people who are interested in such high-resolution models are obviously also interested in gaming mice with ultra-fast and accurate tracking performance. COUGAR may not be the most popular gaming brand in the market but they've released quite a few award winning products like last year’s Revenger Optical Gaming Mouse so when they asked if we'd be interested in checking the new and updated Revenger S model we said yes.

COUGAR products are designed by COUGAR GERMANY, a professional R&D engineering team and COUGAR is part of the “HEC/COMPUCASE” Group. The purpose of COUGAR GERMANY is the satisfaction of the customer, reaching it by creating most valuable, advanced products. COUGAR – YOUR POWER!

Compared to last year’s Revenger Optical Gaming Mouse the brand new Revenger S is not really that much different. To be more specific under the slightly redesigned enclosure the new Revenger S has many similarities with its predecessor including the same PMW3360 optical sensor by Pixart (12000DPI/250IPS/50G/6500FPS), total of 6 programmable buttons, OMRON switches for the primary buttons (50 million clicks), 32-bit ARM processor with 512Kb of onboard memory, 2 lighting zones with 4 modes (16.8 million colors), anti-slip rubber flanks and a gold plated USB plug located at the end of a 1.8 meter long rubber cable. As a matter of fact the two only differences between the Revenger and the Revenger S are their enclosures (the Revenger S seems to offer improved grip) and the different polling rate (1000Hz vs 2000Hz) which in the case of the latter should further reduce input lag (probably added for people with very large/wide monitors).

PACKAGING AND CONTENTS

cougar revenger s review 1t

The Revenger S arrived inside a black and orange box which has a large product picture at the front, the company logo and the RGB feature.

Most of the main features are also printed on the right side of the box in large bold font.

COUGAR has placed the features list at the rear in 12 different languages right beneath 2 pictures.

You can find the specifications table at the base of the box as seen above.

As usual the front of the box opens up to reveal the mouse behind a clear plastic cover (you can place your hand over it to check its size).

In terms of bundle aside the Revenger S gaming mouse you are also getting 4 COUGAR stickers, a product catalog and the user manual.

THE REVENGER S

Measuring 130mm in length, 65mm in width and 43mm in height the 94g heavy Revenger S is a medium sized gaming mouse.

Two fully programmable buttons and a rubberized area (anti-slip flank) are placed on the left side.

The company logo is placed at the rear and as expected is also one of the RGB lighting zones.

Another rubber anti-slip flank is taking most of the right side of the housing.

A single DPI selection (4 available presets) button is placed at the top of the Revenger S.

The clickable scroll wheel is rubber coated and is also the 2nd RGB lighting zone.

Three large PTFE feet, the company logo and of course the Pixart PMW3360 optical sensor are located at the base of the mouse.

COUGAR prioritized ease of use so instead of a braided cable they used a rubber one (easier to route but not as durable as braided one) with a gold plated USB plug on its end.

UIX SYSTEM

downloadst

As always you can download the latest software and firmware version from the official COUGAR product page as seen above.

If the software detects that your mouse firmware needs updating it will inform you as seen above.

COUGAR has been using the user friendly UIX system (control panel) for quite some time now (same exact design even when compared to our review of the original Revenger) and so from its 3 tabs you can adjust the 4 available DPI presets (independent axis adjustment is supported), adjust the DPI for the trigger/sniper button, set the polling rate, enable/disable angle snapping, calibrate the mouse for use with your mouse pad, change the lift height (LOD), program all 6 buttons to the desired functions (macros included), change the illumination color of both zones and save/edit all the available profiles.

CONCLUSION

The Revenger S Optical Gaming Mouse arrived at the same time as several other models so it took slightly longer for us to finish this review since we tested all of them with our usual game selection (World of Tanks, World of Warships, Star Citizen, Dreadnought, Elite Dangerous and Warframe). First of all we liked the slightly redesigned housing of the new Revenger S compared to that of the original Revenger since it offers even better grip. The same goes with the PMW3360 optical sensor by Pixart since it’s not only one of the fastest in the market today but also one of the most accurate ones (as we’ve seen with other gaming mice as well). Testing the 2000Hz polling rate feature on 3 different monitors (30/35/40”) took some time but we didn’t encounter any noticeable improvement compared to 1000Hz (we’re not professional gamers but there’s nothing wrong with having an edge in games even if you don’t see it). Again the 2 zone RGB lighting system may not be the most impressive one out there (the rear zone on the original Revenger was actually better) but that’s not a game breaker. Our sole problem with the Revenger S is its weight since at 94g it’s roughly 26g lighter compared to its predecessor. Now this may not be a bad thing for some people but at least to me the Revenger S felt too light and took a few hours to get used to (still a bit heavier would be ideal).

With a current price tag set at USD49.99 inside the USA (Amazon) and for 63Euros inside the EU (Amazon UK) the brand new Revenger S Optical Gaming Mouse by COUGAR actually costs less compared to its predecessor. Of course for owners of the original Revenger the brand new Revenger S may not seem like a significant upgrade but for everyone else it does offer a very good price/performance ratio and even though it’s far from perfect it’s still definitely worth our Golden Award.
