Ever since a fanless PC was first launched on the market, they have exerted a certain fascination. When Shuttle unveiled the very first model of its type to the public in the form of the XS35 in 2010, this heralded the start of a whole series of silent solutions that are cooled by purely passive means and do not have a fan. This facilitated possible applications that were previously inconceivable. At the time, the fanless PCs from Shuttle actually made many things possible for the very first time. Now, to mark the start of a new year, a completely new generation is being launched.

The first representative, the XPC Barebone DX30 from the "XPC slim" family, relies on the Intel Apollo Lake microarchitecture with a 14 nm design. The barebone boasts a powerful Intel Celeron processor J3355 (dual-core, 2 MB cache, up to 2.5 GHz) and provides room for 8 GB of DDR3L memory. A 2.5 inch drive (HDD or SSD) with SATA 6 Gbit/s and an NVMe SSD (M.2-2280) can be installed as a mass storage device. The outer dimensions of the black chassis are 19 x 16.5 x 4.3 cm (LWH), thus producing a volume of roughly 1.35 litres.

"With the DX30 we are opening a new chapter. An expansion in possible applications, a robust steel chassis and the price point make it more attractive than ever,” says Tom Seiffert, Head of Marketing & PR at Shuttle Computer Handels GmbH. "Two model series, that of the XS35 and that of the XS36, will be replaced by DX30.”

On the outside, spread across the front and back, the user has access to 1x HDMI, 1x DisplayPort, 2x USB 3.0, 4x USB 2.0, a card reader, 1x RJ45, 1x PS/2 and 2x RS-232. The PVG01 adapter cable, which is available separately, can be used to replace one of the serial interfaces with an additional VGA slot.

The soldered-on Intel Celeron processor J3355 contains an Intel HD Graphics 500 graphics unit which via DisplayPort enables smooth 4K playback at 60 Hz and can address up to three monitor connections simultaneously (DisplayPort, HDMI and VGA).

The DX30 is supplied with an interchangeable WLAN module (in the M.2-2230 slot) with an external antenna. Gigabit LAN is also present via the RJ45 port with an Intel i211 Ethernet Controller. In addition to Wake-on LAN, the new model can also be started via a remote power-on connection. If a specific jumper is removed on the mainboard, the device always starts automatically as soon as it is supplied with power.

Power is supplied by an external 19 Volt power adapter delivering 40 Watt. Alternatively, power can also be supplied from another power source with 12 Volt DC. The tolerance here is +/-5 % in each case. When the device is running, the power consumption is barely 7 Watt.

Previously, the fanless models in the "XPC slim" family were only designed for vertical operation. This is now changing with the sales launch of the latest member of the family. The new housing and the amount of waste heat, which has been reduced again, now permit horizontal usage, even in 24/7 permanent operation. The ambient temperature can be 0-40°C.

The areas of application of the DX30 are as varied as the range of conceivable installation sites and mounting options. Numerous M3 threaded holes are available for example for installation flat on a desk in the office, mounted on a digital signage display using the VESA bracket that is also supplied, or for individual attachment concepts.
