Huawei's Deputy Chairman and Rotating CEO Ken Hu met with Víctor Calvo-Sotelo, the Spanish Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Information Society on June 29, at Huawei's headquarters. Mr. Hu and Mr. Calvo-Sotelo signed multiple agreements on behalf of Huawei and the Spanish government. Under these agreements, the two parties will jointly promote the digital transformation of Spanish companies to help develop smart cities and the digital economy in Spain.

After visiting Huawei's headquarters, Mr. Calvo-Sotelo remarked: “Training in new technologies and the digital transformation for enterprises both need to be strengthened in the Spanish market. Today, with the signing of these agreements, we take a step forward. But we must continue working to create jobs, attract foreign investment, and internationalize Spanish ICT companies.”

"The digital economy is critical for promoting economic growth in Europe. It is also necessary to boost the region's employment and competitiveness," said Mr. Hu, "The Spanish government is committed to promoting the development of its digital economy and helping Spanish companies complete digital transformation by innovating ICT technologies. This is a visionary approach. Huawei would like to strengthen cooperation with the Spanish government, and contribute further to Spain's digital transformation and cultivation of ICT talent."

An agreement also stipulates that Huawei will participate in the network construction of the ICT Demonstration Center, and provide the required technical support. Huawei is committed to promoting ICT knowledge transfer and providing training on new technologies. Efforts include sharing ICT technologies and creating internship opportunities for Spanish students.

For two consecutive years, Huawei has collaborated with the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) to offer a mobile communications research program called "Leading the LTE Era." In addition, Spain is among the first countries in which Huawei launched its flagship CSR program, Seeds for the Future. In 2015 alone, three sessions of this program have been completed in Spain. In the future, Huawei will extend the scope of this program to benefit more Spanish students.

Since its entry into the Spanish market in 2001, Huawei has established five offices in Spain, with its national headquarters in Madrid. Currently, Huawei employs over 1,000 staff in Spain, of whom 80% are local hires. Huawei has also created 1,600 jobs indirectly for local communities. Huawei provides services for major Spanish telecom operators such as Telefonica, Vodafone, and Orange, connecting 30 million subscribers. Huawei has also established a Network Operation Center and multiple joint innovation centers with its partners in Spain.
